ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF STYLE IN THE WAY!!

New Year’s resolutions make me nervous. I feel pressured and stressed to create the most amazing, life-changing idea that will better not only myself and the rest of society. I found myself struggling with these pressures on December 31, 2015. While contemplating my New Year’s Resolution I knew I wanted to do something big. Something that I had always been afraid to do: I was going to design my own blog.

Bloggers like Chiara Ferragni and Leandra Medine seem to live such beautiful and amazing lives. Their ability to write about what they love while traveling the world served as an inspiration to me. I was dying to be a part of it. The beauty of the fashion industry, the amazing photographs that flood my Instagram feed; it’s a cult that I needed to join.

Lots of mundane fears had held me back from blogging up to this point. Posting too many pictures of myself might come off as narcissistic to my friends. People might not understand the purpose behind my blogging. What if everyone hates my outfits? Will I even have time to blog? I’m in college; sometimes I don’t even have time to eat lunch.

After getting past all of my fears, I spent all of winter break brainstorming names for the website. I wanted the name to be something that represented two of my interests combining. Those interests being music and fashion. When I say music I have a unique definition of the term. It’s not just the top hits, the party anthems, what my classmates are listening to. For me, it’s extremely personal. It’s my own playlist of artists and genres that come together to define who I am.

Kurt Cobain can write a song using two notes only. Grab a guitar and play F# and D eighty-four times and you have the song “Something in the Way.” There’s a beauty in that kind of simplicity. It’s effortless and anyone who can actually play guitar can replicate the sound. I want my sense of style to be as effortless as Nirvana’s music. Combining my other interest for fashion to this song was a no-brainer. This brings us to the final title for my ongoing masterpiece: Style in the Way. The beautiful thing about a blog is that unlike a song, it lasts longer than 3 minutes. It never ends.

I didn’t know when I started this project that it would lead me to intern at one of the most influential magazines in fashion. I didn’t know it would lead me to educate my peers on the topic of fashion, but I’m so glad I did it. Sure, I only have a couple hundred followers at this point, but there is so much more to it than those quantitative measures. In the early days of styleintheway.com, writing was a pain, styling outfits was a struggle, but I still had so much fun doing it. I didn’t know what I was doing. At. All. But, hey! Now it is becoming more and more effortless to post here and I can’t imagine my life without this blog.

A year ago today, Style in the Way was created. Thank you so much to everyone who has supported me through this journey! I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this blog.
