I Will Be Transitioning To Fall For A Long Time — And I’m Not Mad About It

Transitioning to fall might be even better than fall itself. I’m not forced to wear a jacket but if I want to, it’s on. I can still wear my favorite skirts when balanced with long sleeves and more subtle hues. I’m finding new ways to wear my current favorites while slipping into some of last years knits. Standing in between two different worlds is exciting as we prepare to enter fashions favorite season.

Having September hit, for the first time that I am not a student, is an interesting feeling. Seeing so many friends head back to school, I feel I’m about to be reluctantly dragged back along with them. The back to school crowd has spread a touch of fall spirit along and while I am still experiencing 70 degree days here in NYC, there is definitely a new chill to the air that has just begun to enter the atmosphere. There have already been days where I wish I wore a sweater and jeans but then others that are way too hot for my go-to t-shirt and skirt look. This period is certain to last at least a month and a half and definitely leaves a sense of uncertainty to shopping and getting dressed. As I am transitioning to fall, these are a few of the pieces that keep me balanced.

A Puffy Headband

This Prada-esque trend is still going strong this season and it has certainly grown on me. At first, I was slightly taken aback by the amount of space this piece takes up on someone’s head but now I can’t get enough. It’s perfect for transitioning to fall because of the back-to-school Blair Waldorf vibe it brings. Upper-eastsiders and downtown girls alike are all collecting headbands around this time. I have this in Velvet Green and Velvet Black—it’s helped me take a basic jeans and t-shirt outfit to new levels in just five seconds.

Long Sleeve Dresses

Florals for fall, I’ve written about it before because it’s truly genius. I decided that this dress had to be the hero piece of my next shoot the moment I saw it. It’s structure and detailing is elevated and flattering. It’s LoveShackFancy, and the good news is that its femininity and youthfulness bridges the gap between summer and fall in effortless style. Anything with long sleeves and a short skirt is flattering and chic for transitioning to fall.

Cut-out Boots

These shoes always come out when fall begins to hit. I used to feel like they were my back-to-school shoes and yet they’ve followed me into my post-grad life. Suede and leather are always great textures that may be too heavy for summer yet perfect for September. Walking through the city in these, I started to get excited to pull out the rest of my boots for transitioning to fall.

Transitional Knits

I couldn’t write about fall without mentioning sweaters. At high noon, it currently feels a bit much to be wearing one but in a cold office setting or in the evenings it’s the perfect match. Allowing this to slip over your summer wardrobe may begin with color. Light summery tones can definitely make this blend subtle. My current favorites are whites, light blues, and lilac purples. Plus, a little off-the-shoulder action never hurt anybody when transitioning to fall. Paired with this skirt, heads will turn.

It’s crazy how quickly summer turns into fall when you are working so I will be preparing myself for this sudden change in a hurry. What are the little changes that you are bringing to your wardrobe with the changing season? I would love to know! Let me know in the comments below.
