Visit Amsterdam: 5 Travel Tips For Booking, Food, Stay And More

I say this a lot, like every time I travel, but I think that Amsterdam might be the best place I have visited so far. I recommend for you to visit Amsterdam because of how relaxing this city is compared to the tourist hustle and bustle that has kept me on my toes at other locations. The museums are for the most part very niche which gives you the opportunity to spend your time there learning about all things Dutch and the city is very walkable.

Season

A lot of my friends chose to visit Amsterdam in February and did not have the best of times because of the cold. They said they were standing around feeling frostbitten so I was really glad that I had booked this for the spring. We were lucky that the weather was so amazing while we were there. It was almost in the 70s the entire weekend and all of the flowers were in bloom. I visited the bloemenmarkt to pick up the perfect flowers to match my jeans. Since the best parts of this city are the canals and parks, it was really nice to enjoy them during spring.

Food

What surprised me most about this city was definitely the food. My tip for this category is; try poffertjes as your first meal!! These tiny Dutch pancakes were on the menu everywhere and are a staple in this city. I did not end up trying them until my last meal and I fell in love instantly. They are the perfect dessert and I can’t believe I haven’t had one before. I wish I had tried them sooner so that I could have been eating them this entire time. I just found out there is a place in London at Camden Market that sells these and I am going to have to make a trip there. I’m going to have to plan another visit to Amsterdam just for this treat.

Besides the amazing forms of Dutch pancakes, the food there was very trendy and there were so many healthy options. Surprisingly, the food I had in Amsterdam was the best I have had all throughout Europe (besides Paris, of course). I knew before my visit that a lot of trendy people live in this city and the food is enough to tell you that. There are so many healthy options and the food markets are insane! A city famous for pancakes and fries; sign me up!

Stay

I have always been terrified to stay in hostels but this trip became my first time doing it. I typically stay in Airbnb’s while traveling with friends but there is a lack of availability in this city. There are so many hostels there though with a wide range of price and quality. We ended up finding a really nice one called Meininger. It ended up being more like a small hotel room and I was happy to share it with my friends! This was definitely far more luxurious than the traditional hostel experience but I am glad to be able to check that off of my bucket list.

Planning

There is no plan really necessary when you visit Amerstdam because just by wandering the streets of this city there is so much to entertain you. This is another reason this place reminded me of Paris because a set agenda was not really necessary. Amsterdam was almost like a beach trip because of how stress-free it was.
