WHOA! THE AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS WERE CONTROVERSIAL

The AMA’s hosted a controversial and thought-provoking event last night that has the media running wild to try and cover it all. From things like Gigi Hadid’s controversial Melania Trump impression to the bold fashion statements that hit the carpet that night, it just kept getting more and more interesting. For the purposes of Style in the Way we will be focusing on the fashion of the night. Two major trends moved from the runway to the red carpet and they were completely unignorable. Say hello to the resurgence of Skin and Sequins. It feels like we’ve been moving from minimalistic red carpet looks to more dramatic ones in the past few years. It was exciting to see this all come together last night.

But first, let’s talk about sequins:

I’ve stressed this in so many of my past stories because the signs of this trend keep coming and coming. It sometimes feels like designers are just throwing sequins at us and screaming, “EVERYONE, WEAR THEM!!” Truth be told: it’s working. Celebrities are clearly SO on board with this trend.

Showing off lingerie in sheer dresses was another route that celebs went for:

Again, this trend was ALL. OVER. THE. RUNWAY. in September during fashion month. It’s absolutely stunning. It has already channeled to the mainstream audience and people all over the world are wearing sheer clothing out in public. It’s pretty scary to even consider wearing these looks for some people, *ahem* myself, but there’s something inspirational about it. Who could forget J. Lo’s skin-bearing, animal print Versace look we saw in  2000 on the carpet?!

It’s ingrained in my mind and I was 3 when it happened! She may have received some negative feedback then, but it’s a whole new ballgame sixteen years later. Now everybody and their neighbor isn’t afraid to show off a little bit of skin.

Ugh, award shows. Bringing America together through controversy since the creation of television.
