ART OF THE IN-BETWEEN

Yeah, you’ve already heard me talking about the Met gala theme, but I’m not done. Today, I finally had the chance to visit the exhibit. To catch you up, the Met gala honored Rei Kawakubo the designer of Comme des Garçons and attempted to highlight the individuality and avant-garde aspects of her work.

Walking around and looking at the exhibit, I really learned how much more than “clothes” Kawakubo’s work is. The pieces were truly as much of a work of art as the rest of the paintings that hang in the museum; if not more.

As we walked around, I heard multiple dumb tourists (sorry, not sorry) commenting things like “Ya know, I just don’t get fashion or these clothes. Who would wear that?” I wanted to throw my pamphlet at them!! My favorite quote of Kawakubo’s that I read in those pages said: “Personally, I don’t care about function at all… When I hear ‘where could you wear that?’ or ‘it’s not very wearable,’ or ‘who would wear that?’ to me it’s just a sign that someone missed the point.”

I think I see the point, do you see it?
