AN ODE TO THE REAL MET GALA ATTENDEES

This year I was more excited than ever to see what everyone would be wearing at the Met Gala. The past few themes have not been that complicated, but Vogue threw a curve ball. Challenging the attendees to wear avant-garde couture inspired by Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons is probably one of the most difficult themes we have ever seen.

I am currently under the impression that certain celebrities misread their invite. While they certainly looked beautiful, they definitely were not fully embracing the spirit of Comme des Garçons. At the Met Gala, the clothes should be something that you would not expect to see at any other event. Certain celebrities could have been anywhere.
Twitter agreed with me on this one:

A lot of models showed up in skin-bearing looks. Wearing nearly nothing is completely unrelated to Rei Kawakubo. Comme des Garçons is about wearing EVERYTHING but the kitchen sink. That may be a trend on mainstream high fashion runways but the Met Gala is the only night that you can dress like you’re on the runway for Comme des Garçons, so why not take advantage?

Rihanna was one of the few people actually wearing a look from Comme des Garçons and she literally defined what Kawakubo stands for as a designer. Originality. Complexity.

Of all the designers, the only one I would call comparable to Comme des Garçons is Maison Margiela. Katy Perry became another exceptional example of embracing the theme when she stepped onto the red carpet in this ensemble.

Hey, Cara Delevigne! If you’re reading this, what is on your head? I don’t even know but who cares?? She looks like an ice cold superhero in Chanel. It’s almost like she’s the voice behind Frozone’s wife in The Incredibles.

Lily Aldrige’s look is the one I would most likely have worn. She took a more simple and flattering design and made the theme come to life by adding the red veil. Demna Gvasalia is the greatest designer of our time.

Sure, these girls have received a lot of negative feedback but that’s what should be happening! The clothes should be so complex that regular people just don’t get it. People who don’t understand why I chose these ladies as the best dressed are the people that I am laughing at. So who are the real Met Gala attendees? The people who lived in the life of Comme des Garçons for a night. Understanding art in this form takes a complex mind that sees the world differently. Fashion is an art and art is something that some people just don’t get.

CHEERS TO THE WOMEN WHO GET IT!
